Why You Freaking Out?

There is a story that many of you may have heard before. Jesus and the disciples are in a boat, Jesus is sleeping when a large storm comes. The storm is so crazy that the disciples begin freaking out, they believe that the vessel will wreck and they will be swimming for their lives. They look over, and Jesus is still sleeping (best dream ever!) so they wake Jesus up and...

The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?” When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Silence! Be still!” Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm. Then he asked them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?” The disciples were absolutely terrified. “Who is this man?” they asked each other. “Even the wind and waves obey him!” (Mark 4:38-41)

As I put myself in the shoes (sandals) of the disciples, I totally think I would have acted the same. A crazy storm, life threatening and Jesus was just chilling in the back of the boat counting sheep? Jesus asks “why are you afraid?” at first sight this may seem weird, they were afraid because of the storm, it was overwhelming, they felt like they may die any moment. Look deeper we see a group of men that have been with Jesus for a while now, they have seen him perform amazing acts, they saw the dead come alive, the lame walk.

Fear is normal. When was the last time you were afraid? I'm not talking about walking through a door and someone scaring you, I'm talking about a BIG scare. Maybe you or a loved one had a health scare, car accident, scans and now you are waiting for the results. Perhaps you lost a job, and now you are trying to figure out how you will pay the bills next week. You are watching as your child that you love, prayed for, cared for is beginning to go down a self-destructive road, and you can’t fix it, it's out of your control.

Doubt is a normal human issue, but we can look to Jesus, knowing that He has brought us through the other trials in our lives and we can have faith that He will bring us through again.

Jesus was not disappointed with them because they showed fear, He knew that there would be times in everyone's life that fear was a reasonable response, but faith is the antidote. Doubt is a normal human issue, but we can look to Jesus, knowing that He has brought us through the other trials in our lives and we can have faith that He will bring us through again.

The disciples were absolutely terrified. “Who is this man?” they asked each other. “Even the wind and waves obey him!” (Mark 4:41)

The disciples were terrified, they saw another miracle but still doubted the savior. “Who is this man?” really guys, really, you have seen Him feed over 5,000 men and now calm a storm with three words and your still questioning who He is? Doubt is normal. We doubt things all the time, we allow our sinful, small thinking to overshadow the faithfulness of Jesus Christ.

Fight the fear with your faith

Today I want to encourage you. Don’t beat yourself up when you doubt, when you are fearful of your circumstances. Instead fight the fear with your faith. Know that all circumstances and outcomes lay at the feet of Jesus Christ and we know through faith that He will work all things for His good. Step in faith today.
